Saabs TT rival hots up.
UK weekly motoring magazine, Autoexpress has learned plans to resurrect the famous Saab sports car of the 70s, the Saab Sonnett, and it is to go head to head with the Audi TT. Since Spyker took over early this year, the firm has been boosting in confidence with talk of exciting new models and millions of pounds been spent on promoting the new Saab 9-5. This confidence is further expressed by the appointment of a new design boss Jason Castriota, who is planning a major offensive. Autoexpress managed to secure an exclusive interview with the new design boss, and ex-Bertone and Pininfarina designer who was responsible for the Maserati GranTurismo and others.

With the recent annoucement of Saab’s new Design Director Jason Castriota, it appears that Saab is looking to bring a bit of sleek and sexy styling to the 2012 Saab 9-3. Castorita has been first and possibly most important assignment will be to design the new 9-3, which is due to make a debut in 2012.  Saab is squarely aiming to wow buyers away from BMW and Audi.  The new 9-3 will be the centrepiece for Saab to demostrate its ability to build distinctive and upmarket premium cars.  Saab certainly believe they have the right man in charge for this project, with Castriota the Pininfarina alum designed the one off Ferrari 4/5, the sleek Maserati Gran Turismo (shown above) and the controversial Bertone Mantide. Castorita told Automotive News Europe “It’s absolutely vital we get this car right.”  “This is Saab returning to its roots and not having to worry about being part of a much larger machine that they were before in the GM organisation.” Saab CEO Victor Muller is keen to ensure that the new car emphasises aerodynamics and efficiency and he told ANE “It is truly aircraft inspired and Swedish clean.”
